We reserve the right of change. The language of the symposion is German and Hungarian. Joseph Beuys achieved world-wide fame as a representative of the visual arts during the second half of the 20th century. He was an internationally acclaimed sculptor, draftsman, and maker of actions. However, his greatest wish was to develop an ´Extended Concept of Art´: a call to all human beings, to everyone of us, to free art, our creative potential, from the conventional art world in order to make it a basis for all aspects of life. In this way life would be revitalised and shaped by inner human activity. In so doing we become collaborators in the shared creation of Humanity as a Work of Art: SOCIAL SCULPTURE It is my own mission and the mission of art to shape the social order as one forms a sculpture (Joseph Beuys) During his lifetime, because of the political divisions in Europe, Joseph Beuys was prevented from bringing his life promoting ideas to Central European countries. The ideas in this symposion - presented for the first time on a larger scale after the changes in 1989 - continue to grow in importance and relevance for humanity living in a technological world. Speakers from six countries have been invited. Most have been personal friends, students, companions of Joseph Beuys, all witness to his charismatic personality. Joseph Beuys considered his life´s work in its entirety to be a promotion of a new concept and understanding of the human being which he expressed in the formula: ART=HUMAN BEING=CREATIVITY=FREEDOM In this sense, this symposion will be a ´promotional´ event, the promotion of an invisible product: the intrinsic value of a human being. beuys@mucsarnok.hu p www.beuys.c3.hu Mucsarnok - Budapest XIV., Hosök tere Telefon: 00 36 1 343-7401 Travel Information: www.vista.hu Tel: 00 36 1 269-6033 Fax: 00 36 1 267-5568 Programme coordination: Zsóka Pathy (Germany) Mariann Mayer, Andrea Regos (Mucsarnok/Kunsthalle)
