Deimantas Narkevicius: History continued / videoinstallations

The film and video work of Deimantas Narkevicius Lithuanian artist are centered on issues of history and the relation and representability of official and personal memory. Besides his inquests about the politicization of memory and the potentials of representing historical/personal traumas, he explores cinematic devices and possibilities. He places current issues of memory politics and personal memory into the context of international contemporary art by analyzing the relation between reality, fiction and document through the re-construction / evocation of personal histories. Narkevicius is one of those artists who point out the critical role of perception in a consistent way, and analyze the formation and operation of memory structures in the light of the post-communist changes.
The exhibition in the Budapest Kunsthalle is the artist’s first solo appearance in Hungary, presenting a selection of film- and video installations from the past 7-8 years, including his latest work, Revisiting Solaris (2007).

Deimantas Narkevicius was born in Utena, Lithuania, in 1964. He lives and works in Vilnius. In 2005 he was on DAAD Scholarship in Berlin. His solo exhibitions include those at the daadgalerie in Berlin (2005 and 2007), the gb&agency gallery in Paris (2006), the Zeitgenössische Galerie in Leipzig (2006) and Secession in Vienna (2007). He has participated in several biennials and international group exhibitions, such as this year’s Skulpturenprojekt Münster (http://www.skulptur-projekte.de/kuenstler/narkevicius/) among others.
