"The Second Sex" - Women's Art in Hungary 1960-2000

The exhibition, which borrows its name from the book by Simone de Beauvoir published in 1949, is the first representative show of women's art of the recent past. The concept of women's art first came into the Hungarian professional consciousness around the time of the change in political system in 1989, though to the West of Hungary, it was already an ongoing topic at the time. The world view formulated in women's art and the specific subjects and solutions which emerge in it, undoubtedly justify its raison d'etre as a category and make the formulation of a separate discourse necessary. The exhibition attempts to assemble as many different perspectives shown by women in Hungarian art as possible and alongside women artists whose work is now considered classic, it also sees as its task the introduction of the newest generations.
