Derkó 2022 | Reporting exhibition of the fine arts scholarship awardees

Kunsthalle Budapest has been organising the introductory exhibition of “Derkó grantees”, artists awarded the Derkovits prize, for years now. The show takes place right after the deliberation and selection procedure, giving the artists an opportunity for a group exhibition in a renowned institution already at the beginning of the year. The vernissage is also an occasion to congratulate them on their winning projects.

The scholarship named after the Hungarian painter and graphic artist Gyula Derkovits, known for decades under the name Derkó in artistic circles, wields particular prestige for young creators, being the first state distinction awarded in an artist’s career. The scholarship is primarily meant to support young artists at the beginning of their career, to provide for their living expenses and to ensure the conditions for creative work. In a way, Derkó serves as a “stage pass” to the official artistic world. Young artists must use their scholarship period wisely in order to stay on course, have their calling reinforced and develop their potential. Art historians, gallerists and collectors keep an eye on “Derkó grantees” who thereby enjoy more attention at the start of their career and are offered opportunities for solo or group exhibitions.

The scholarship was set up in 1955 to help artists under 35 years of age in starting their careers. The grant may be awarded to young artists for a maximum of three consecutive years. Each year, twenty-six artists can benefit from the grant amounting to HUF 200 000 gross a month. The submissions are judged by an independent professional jury, appointed by the Ministry of Human Resources, not infrequently after difficult deliberations. Both the professionals awarding the grant and the young beneficiaries take professional responsibility for the development of their future art career. This year, the jury was invited to select from 180 artists the ones they credited with a promising career and whose bold efforts and innovative ideas they judged worthy of support. The call for submissions and the selection procedure has been managed by the Magyar Alkotóművészeti Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft. (Hungarian Creative Arts Public Benefit Nonprofit Kft).
